James "Sawyer" Ford is a character from Lost, and one of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815.

Background: James's parents died when he was 8 after they were swindled out of their life savings by a man calling himself "Sawyer" who made his mother believe he was going to take her with him out of Alabama. James's father killed his mother, and then himself, while James hid under the bed. James wrote a letter to "Mr. Sawyer" that he told himself he'd deliver to him one day, personally. He grew up in the south, dropping out of school in 9th grade, and became a con man himself by age 19. He spent a lot of his time hunting down the man who'd ruined his parents, but found himself instead becoming him, using the same con the man had used on his parents on other women, though he faltered at going through with it at least once when he found out there was a little boy involved. He tried to con another woman, Cassidy, and swindled her out of a great deal of money, but she turned him in, and James ended up in prison where he spent nine months of his seven year sentence before bargaining his way out by giving up fellow inmates.

James went to Australia in search of "Mr. Sawyer" and killed a man there he believed to be him, but who was not. He got into a bar fight afterward and was arrested and deported, which landed him on Oceanic Flight 815--the flight which crash landed him on a mysterious island in the middle of nowhere.

Personality: Sawyer is a con man, so he's capable of being charming, but incredibly selfish, especially in the beginning of the show. However, he also has a weak spot for women in distress, and for kids--he tries to help Kate out repeatedly, and he can't go through with a con because it might hurt a child the way he was hurt. He's shown to be a caring and considerate lover, when he cares for someone. He goes through a period of wanting to "Play house" as Kate puts it, with her, happy to settle down on the island and build a life, because he has nothing to go back to. His life has been nothing but disappointment and crime back home, where he's run away from his only chance to build a family--when he conned Cassidy and ended up in prison, and denied that her child could be his a year later. But he grows over the show and the Sawyer we see with Juliet is a man who's taken on responsibility. He's the head of security for Dharma. He takes care of his people and his lover and is working to find a place in the world that he's never had. He's an avid reader, from the very beginning, making up for his lack of formal education by self education, often to be found by himself reading a work of literature. Even during a crisis, he's found reading and Jack asks him what he's doing, when they should be preparing, and Sawyer says that he heard once that "Winston Churchill read a book every night, even during the Blitz. He said it made him think better. It's how I like to run things. I think." And that sums up his way of operating, even before he's at all in charge--where Jack reacts, Sawyer thinks. He hoards up things when everyone else is panicking, because it will be useful later. He tries to control the guns and meds, because it puts a system in place. He spends time away and reading. He scouts the island. He makes deals with devils, and does the things others won't do, but he rarely reacts without thinking. He's calculating, but he's not cold. He's very passionate, and he cares far more than he lets on, and once he lets people in to his life--once he lets down the walls enough--he's very, very loyal. It just takes a bit to get past the walls, but once someone does, there's a sensitive man who'll pick a flower on the way home to make a girl smile, and who reads poetry and can talk about great leaders of the past. He's just also capable of shooting a rushing polar bear and strangling a man with a chain, which makes him multilayered and interesting.

Physical Description: 6'1.5", blond hair he wears layered between chin length and his shoulders. Generally a bit scruffy, but not a full beard. Blue eyes.
